The unsung heroes of the supply chain
When was the last time you stopped to think about why your supply chain actually works?
Probably rarely. Because well-functioning supply chains have one remarkable characteristic: as long as everything is running smoothly, nobody talks about it.
The right parts are in the right place at the right time. Production is running smoothly, the customer receives their goods, the warehouse operates in sync, and the sales team can deliver. It is a state of affairs we take for granted in the supply chain – and yet it is anything but a given. Because behind every functioning supply chain are people. It is not the grand strategy documents, nor the software alone, nor even the algorithms that ensure companies can deliver. It is the dispatchers, production planners, buyers, logistics managers and supply chain managers who make decisions every day – often under time pressure, often with incomplete information, and always in an environment that has become increasingly unpredictable. Recent years – and the current situation too – have demonstrated this particularly clearly. Pandemics, geopolitical tensions, fluctuating demand, disrupted transport routes, supplier issues – the list of disruptions has grown longer. Supply chains have become more fragile, markets more volatile, forecasts more difficult. And yet there are companies that continue to operate with remarkable stability.

Why?
Because people work to ensure this happens every day. They call suppliers, reschedule orders, adjust plans, find alternatives, reassure both sales and production teams, and try to bring order to a system that sometimes feels more like a jigsaw puzzle without a template. It is work that rarely takes centre stage. Planning prevents problems – and that is precisely why it often goes unnoticed. Perhaps this is one of the great ironies of modern supply chains: the better planning works, the more invisible it becomes. Yet it is precisely in times like these that it becomes clear just how much expertise, experience and dedication lie behind this daily work. That is why it is worth pausing for a moment. Not today to discuss yet another new method or launch the next optimisation initiative – but to pay attention to the people behind the processes.
We at Abels & Kemmner experience this every day too. In our projects, we see the dedication with which planners, dispatchers and supply chain managers keep their systems stable. And we see it within our own team as well: colleagues who work passionately to make companies more predictable, resilient and successful.
The truth is: many supply chains function so well today simply because of these unsung heroes.
People who take responsibility.
People who solve problems before they become apparent.
People who make sure others can do their jobs.
And perhaps today is just the right day to say it out loud: a simple “thank you”. To the people who ensure that supply chains keep running every single day.
With that in mind: thank you.
